We are a Tesla Certified Installer covering North Yorkshire from our base at Yarm. This page is what changes when a Powerwall 3 goes into a YO, HG or DL postcode — Northern Powergrid's licence areas, the G98 and G99 routes, conservation-area planning, and a county where a quarter of homes have no gas.

Who fits it, and what Powerwall 3 is

We are ALPS Electrical, based at Kirklevington just outside Yarm: a Tesla Certified Installer — by our own count one of around 50 in the UK — as well as MCS Certified and NAPIT Registered, with 500+ five-star reviews across Checkatrade and Google. Andy Pemberton surveys and specifies every system that leaves this office.

That certification is not decoration: Tesla's guidance is that installation should only be performed by a Tesla Certified Installer, and in the UK Tesla connects you to one.

Powerwall 3 gives 13.5 kWh usable per unit, an integrated solar inverter with three MPPTs, and on-grid and backup power of up to 11.04 kW depending on local conditions. Our Powerwall 3 review covers the product; this page covers what changes when the house is in North Yorkshire.

Northern Powergrid, G98 and G99 across YO, HG and DL

North Yorkshire has the same network operator we deal with at home, Northern Powergrid — but it runs two distribution systems under separate licences: Northern Powergrid (Northeast) plc, MPANs commencing 15, and Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire) plc, MPANs commencing 23.

County name notwithstanding, York and Harrogate both sit in the Northeast licence area. We tested all seven towns on this page against Northern Powergrid's own boundary dataset and every one came back Northeast, the same area as Yarm; Leeds, as a control, came back Yorkshire. Those are point samples, so check your own bill: an MPAN commencing 15 is Northeast, 23 is Yorkshire.

Why 3.68 kW decides your paperwork

EREC G98 covers type-tested micro-generation up to 16 A per phase — 3.68 kW single-phase — aggregated across the premises, and is explicit that “For the avoidance of doubt this includes electricity storage devices”. Under G98 nobody waits: we notify Northern Powergrid within 28 days of commissioning, a legal requirement. Above that threshold it is G99, and that form goes in “before any generation equipment is installed”.

Powerwall 3 is unusually flexible here: its AC output at 230 V is installer-configurable in steps of 3.68, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11.04 kW. The same hardware can be commissioned at exactly the G98 ceiling and notified afterwards, or specified higher and applied for first. On a Ripon farmhouse with a large array we want the headroom; on a Knaresborough semi covering the evening peak, the lower setting keeps the paperwork retrospective.

Northern Powergrid also publishes an Electricity Storage Fast Track assessing eligible connections within 10 working days rather than the normal 45-day response, but eligibility requires export limited to 16 A per phase by a G100-compliant device and no island-mode operation — so whole-home backup usually falls outside it. Treat that as their published process, not a promise; the statutory timescale for a low-voltage connection is 45 working days.

North Yorkshire houses, and where the battery goes

The stock really is older here, and that is not a stereotype — it is in the Valuation Office Agency's council tax tables. 26.4% of North Yorkshire's 303,800 dwellings pre-date 1919, against 20.1% for England; in the former Harrogate district 26.5%, and in Richmondshire 24.7%.

York is the exception almost everyone gets backwards. Only 16.7% of York's 93,040 dwellings pre-date 1919, below the England average, because the walled core is small next to York's large twentieth-century suburbs; 16.4% of its stock went up from 2000 onwards. The heritage constraint in York is concentrated, not a blanket condition.

Dwelling type helps us more than age does. 33.8% of North Yorkshire's households live in a detached house against 22.9% across England, with only 8.0% in flats against 17.1% nationally; York is nearer the national picture at 22.5% detached. That stock is what makes a garage, utility or integral store available, and in our experience it decides whether an install is straightforward. Powerwall 3 is 1,105 × 609 × 193 mm and 130 kg, floor- or wall-mounted and outdoor rated, so it usually has somewhere to go.

On period property the honest answer is that nobody publishes a dataset. A pre-1919 house with no garage and a narrow passage to the rear is harder to work in — our experience, not a statistic, but it is why a Richmond survey takes longer than the same job on a newer estate.

Two councils, dense conservation cover, and the real planning position

Know who you are dealing with. Postcode data puts YO1 in City of York Council's area and HG1 and DL7 in North Yorkshire Council's — so Harrogate, Knaresborough and Northallerton homeowners deal with North Yorkshire Council for planning, York homeowners with City of York Council.

Heritage coverage is dense in both. City of York Council lists 35 conservation areas and over 1,500 listed buildings, and some York conservation areas carry Article 4 Directions, which remove permitted development rights. North Yorkshire Council lists 53 conservation areas in the former Harrogate district alone.

What that does to the job is narrower than most people fear. Under Class A of Part 14 of the GPDO 2015, solar on a conservation-area dwelling is not permitted development on a wall which fronts a highway; equipment must be sited to minimise its effect on the building's appearance and the area's amenity; and a flat-roof installation on Article 2(3) land needs an application for a prior-approval determination. A roof-slope array that does not front a highway does remain permitted development, though — conservation area does not automatically mean no solar.

Listing is stricter: consent is required to alter, extend or demolish, alongside planning permission — and where the main dwelling is listed, the detached garage in its curtilage is outside permitted development too, so “just put it in the garage” stops working. Otherwise the constraint bites on the array rather than the Powerwall; that side is on our solar panels in North Yorkshire page. For context, York has an ambition to be a net-zero carbon city by 2030 and North Yorkshire Council targets operational net zero by 2030 — neither binds a householder.

A quarter of the county is off the gas grid

This is the biggest difference between quoting a battery here and quoting one in a city. DESNZ estimates put 76,567 of North Yorkshire's 303,780 domestic properties off the gas network — 25.2% — against 15.6% for England and 10.8% for Yorkshire and The Humber as a region. York is a different world at 12.7%.

Off-grid homes run on oil, LPG or electricity: fuel bought in, priced by delivery, doing nothing for the electrical load. Around Thirsk, Ripon and Richmond the first question is far more often about riding through a power cut than shaving an evening peak.

Tenure is the other pattern. 41.4% of North Yorkshire households own outright, against 32.5% across England, and 68.6% are owner-occupiers against 61.3%. Outright owners can sensibly make a ten-year decision about a house they have no intention of leaving.

What backup does, and what it does not

In the UK a Powerwall 3 backup system is installed with Backup Gateway 2 — the supported islanding device here. You choose whole-home backup, which powers the entire house during an outage, or partial-home backup, where the loads are picked at design stage. A non-backup configuration swaps the gateway for a Tesla Remote Meter at lower cost: no backup power and no Storm Watch or Backup Reserve, though a gateway can be added later.

Storm Watch activates when the Met Office issues an Amber or Red alert mentioning a risk of power cuts, charging the Powerwall to maximum capacity until the event ends. Backup Reserve sets how much is held back; with under 5% stored at the start of an outage the house loses power until solar recharges it.

How we install a Powerwall 3 in North Yorkshire

By road from Yarm it is roughly 17 miles to Northallerton (about 23 minutes), 21 to Thirsk (27), 22 to Richmond (31), 32 to Ripon (40), 40 to Knaresborough (49), and 43 miles to both York and Harrogate, about 57 minutes each. Routing estimates between town centres, not a service radius — how far we travel depends on the job.

  • Survey. Andy Pemberton checks the consumer unit, the battery position, the cable route to the gateway, the internet situation and — in York and Harrogate — whether the array runs into the planning position above.
  • Design and DNO. We settle the AC output configuration, which decides whether this is a G98 notification within 28 days or a G99 application first. If you already have solar, we check the combined capacity at the premises.
  • Install day. Tesla's guidance is a full day with the power off for roughly four to six hours, up to eight or more if additional electrical work is required — and older properties are where that appears.
  • Commissioning. The Powerwall needs an active internet connection. If it is interrupted for an extended period and Tesla cannot contact you, the warranty may be limited to four years rather than ten.
  • Tariff setup. The Tesla app lets UK owners add import and export tariffs, and Intelligent Octopus Flux enrols the Powerwall in a virtual power plant. Intelligent Octopus Go is not used by Powerwall for cost optimisation.

Many of our York and Harrogate enquiries already have solar. Powerwall 3 can be added to an existing system and Tesla states it is compatible with all major solar inverter brands; it can equally go in with no solar and charge from the grid. Cost, VAT and the warranty position

Tesla publishes no UK price for Powerwall 3. Its order page says you are connected to a Tesla Certified Installer, who contacts you about pricing. Our own guidance — ours, not Tesla's — is from £8,500 installed. Where a job lands above that depends on the gateway configuration, whole-home or partial backup, the consumer unit, and how much additional electrical work an older property needs.

VAT is on your side for now. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 applies a zero rate to installation of specified energy-saving materials until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027, and since 1 February 2024 electrical storage batteries in residential accommodation qualify, including retrofitted and standalone batteries. That end date is the real deadline, not any offer of ours.

The warranty runs ten years from initial installation, and for UK installations Tesla warrants 13.5 kWh at installation and 80% energy retention at ten years, with unlimited cycles for self-consumption, time-based control and backup. It transfers to a later owner with proof of ownership — worth something where 41.4% of households own outright.

Frequently asked questions

1Do I need Northern Powergrid's permission before you fit a Powerwall in York or Harrogate?

It depends on the output we configure. Under EREC G98 — up to 16 A per phase, or 3.68 kW single-phase — there is no advance permission: we notify Northern Powergrid within 28 days of commissioning, a legal requirement. Above that it is a G99 application, submitted before anything is installed. Powerwall 3's output is configurable from 3.68 kW to 11.04 kW, so the route is partly a design decision.

2Will a conservation area stop me having solar and a Powerwall?

Usually not. Under Class A of Part 14 of the GPDO, solar on a conservation-area dwelling is not permitted development on a wall fronting a highway, and a flat roof there needs a prior-approval determination — but a roof-slope array that does not front a highway remains permitted development. Listing is stricter, and permitted development does not cover a building in a listed dwelling's curtilage.

3We are off the gas grid near Ripon. Is a Powerwall the right answer?

Sometimes, and it depends what you want it to do. An estimated 25.2% of North Yorkshire's domestic properties have no gas connection, so heating runs on oil, LPG or electricity — and a Powerwall will not replace that fuel. It will store your own generation and run the house through an outage if we fit Backup Gateway 2. If your priority is cutting an oil bill, we will tell you a battery is the wrong first purchase.

4Can you add a Powerwall 3 to the solar I already have?

Yes. Tesla states Powerwall 3 can be added to an existing solar system and is compatible with all major solar inverter brands, and it can also go in with no solar at all and charge from the grid. 5What does a Powerwall 3 cost in North Yorkshire?

Tesla publishes no UK price — its order page says a Tesla Certified Installer will tell you once you are connected to one. Our own guidance is from £8,500 installed, with the final figure set by the backup configuration and the electrical work the property needs. Installation currently attracts 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
