What to expect when we install a Sigenergy SigenStor

One survey, one design, one network application and usually one day on site. Here is the whole sequence — including the part about whole-home backup that slows your paperwork down, and the reason we check your broadband before we check your roof.

The short version

A SigenStor install is a free survey, a design, a network operator application, then usually one day on site — two if solar is going on the roof at the same time. The stack itself goes together fast. What sets your timeline is the paperwork with Northern Powergrid, and that is decided weeks before anyone turns up.

Sigenergy quotes a 15-minute stackable installation and five-minute commissioning. That part is genuinely quick — it is just not what fills the day. The consumer unit, the cable route, isolation and testing do.

We are an early adopter of the Sigenergy SigenStor in the North East — we install and commission SigenStor systems and have two complete installs documented on our YouTube channel. Here is what those days look like.

The survey and the design

Andy Pemberton surveys and specifies every system we quote, and the survey is free. Five things get decided in that hour: your supply, the consumer unit and cable route, the roof if solar is in scope, whether you want backup — and whether your broadband reaches the stack, because the warranty depends on it.

The board and the cable route are the biggest variable: a board with spare ways three metres from the stack is a different day's work to a board change and a run to the far end of the house. The roof matters too — single-phase controllers take 6,000 W to 24,000 W of PV across two to four MPP trackers, three-phase 8,000 W to 48,000 W, so a roof split across several faces pushes you up the range.

What comes out is a list of named parts, because a SigenStor is a kit you configure, not a box you buy: a Sigen Energy Controller (single-phase 3.0 to 12.0 kW, three-phase 5.0 to 30.0 kW), one to six SigenStor BAT modules, a SigenStor BC connector, and optionally a Sigen Energy Gateway for backup and a SigenStor EVDC module for DC car charging.

There are two module generations — the 280 Ah BAT 5.0 and BAT 8.0, and the 314 Ah BAT 6.0 (5.84 kWh usable) and BAT 10.0 (8.76 kWh usable). Ask which one you are being quoted, by model name, and compare usable kWh rather than headline kWh. Prices are in our SigenStor cost guide.

Northern Powergrid, G98, G99 and the backup catch

Every battery we commission connects to Northern Powergrid's network, and the Network Connections address on its G98 and G99 generation forms is in Stockton-on-Tees. Which form applies is the fork in the road.

G98 covers fully type-tested micro-generation up to and including 16 A per phase — 3.68 kW single-phase, 11.04 kW three-phase — counted across everything at the premises, and the definition explicitly includes electricity storage. Under G98 you install first and notify the operator within 28 days of commissioning on Form B — a legal requirement, not a courtesy.

G99 applies above that and works the other way round: the application goes in before any generation equipment is installed. The operator assesses the network impact and issues a Connection Offer, with an acceptance window typically 30 to 90 days and a statutory timescale of 45 working days for the quotation. A battery alongside solar usually tips a house past 16 A per phase, so G99 is the normal answer — but a domestic fast track, G99 Form A1-2, cuts confirmation from 45 days to 10 days or less.

Here is the catch people are not told. That fast track requires combined generation and storage under 32 A per phase, each device under 16 A per phase, export limited to 16 A per phase through a G100-compliant limiter, and no island-mode operation — and island mode is exactly what whole-home backup is. Want true backup? You are on the standard G99 route and the longer timescale, and we would rather tell you that at survey than after you have paid a deposit.

Install day, in order

Assuming the network side is settled and the kit is on site, the day runs like this.

  1. Arrive, protect, agree the plan. Dust sheets down, route confirmed, power-off window agreed before anything is touched.
  2. Roof first, if there is solar. Scaffold, mount, panels, DC route in — that is what makes it two days rather than one.
  3. Isolate. Supply off, proved dead, locked off.
  4. Build the stack. Modules are floor-standing or wall-mounted and connect through guided quick connectors that, in Sigenergy's words, "auto plug once stacked". The BC connector ties the stack to the Energy Controller.
  5. Gateway, if backup is in scope. The Gateway HomePro is a wall-mounted IP55 unit, 25 kg without its cover, with its own grid and backup port circuits and a built-in bypass, in single-phase 12 kW and 22 kW and three-phase 30 kW versions. Fitting one is real board work — it belongs in the original quote.
  6. Board work, protective devices, comms. The unglamorous half of the day, and most of it.
  7. EV DC module, if you are having one. CCS2 connector, and it must be used with the Energy Controller — it is not a standalone charger.
  8. Energise, test, commission, then hand over.

Where the stack goes, and how much room it needs

Each battery module is 767 mm wide, 270 mm high and 260 mm deep — 265 mm on the BAT 6.0 and BAT 10.0 — and weighs from 55 kg (BAT 5.0) to 78 kg (BAT 10.0), so the stack grows by 270 mm and another 55 to 78 kg with every module you add. The Energy Controller adds 700 x 300 mm and 18 to 36 kg on top, depending on model and cooling. A three-module system is a piece of furniture, not an appliance — the floor matters.

Modules, controller and EV DC module are all IP66, which Sigenergy pairs with the phrase "Install Anywhere", and outdoors is genuinely allowed: modules run from -20°C to 55°C, the controller from -30°C to 60°C. The steer is still indoors if you have the option, because Sigenergy's own warranty document sets a recommended battery working temperature of 10°C to 30°C. A north-facing wall in a Teesside January is legal, warranted, and still not where a battery should spend ten years. A garage or utility room is better, and usually shortens the cable run.

The power-off window

Yes, your electricity goes off for part of the day. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not done the board work.

We will not put a duration on this page, because it depends on your consumer unit and whether a gateway is going in. What we will do is agree the window with you on the morning and tell you before we pull the main switch, not after. Freezers stay shut, and anything medical gets discussed at survey.

Once commissioned it stops being a problem in the other direction. With a gateway fitted Sigenergy quotes 0 ms disruption on the load side at switchover, and off-grid the controller delivers twice its nominal output for 10 seconds to start motors and pumps. Both carry conditions: the 0 ms figure needs the gateway used with the Energy Controller and Sigen battery, and the controller's nominal power must exceed your total backup load. Which is why backup gets designed at survey.

Commissioning and the app handover

Commissioning is quick; the handover is the part worth your attention. We set the app up with you standing there.

mySigen shows a 3D energy-flow screen refreshed every ten seconds and a Sankey diagram tracing each kWh across six energy sources and five load categories. British users can select Octopus Energy in the app's dynamic tariff function. Above that sits the AI layer: SigenAgent for plain-language control, and AI Mode scheduling against weather forecasts, consumption and prices. Sigenergy claims AI Mode gives up to 50% higher average returns than traditional self-consumption mode — a manufacturer claim we have not verified, so treat it as a reason to try the mode, not a payback number. The one thing to take seriously: keep it online. The system enters Safe Operation Mode after 90 days offline, and if it is disconnected for more than a year cumulatively the 10-year cover drops to five years from activation. If your broadband does not reach the garage, sort it at survey, not at the fault.

What we leave you with

You end the day with a working system, the app on your phone, and the paperwork that matters later: the commissioning record and electrical certification, the network operator documents (the G98 Form B notification we file within 28 days, or your G99 connection offer), and your activation date — the warranty clock starts at the earlier of on-site activation or 180 days after factory shipment.

On warranty, the short version: Sigenergy's European terms, which are the ones we quote, give 10 years on the BAT modules, the Energy Controllers and the BC connector, and guarantee at least 60% of usable energy for 10 years or a throughput cap, whichever comes first. What our two filmed installs actually show

Two complete SigenStor jobs are documented start to finish: a solar and battery install on a slate roof and a SigenStor with full home backup. Watching either beats any brochure, because you can see how much of the day is spent nowhere near the battery.

Where we would tell you to spend less. No interest in power cuts and no electric car? The gateway and the EV DC module are money you do not need — and skipping the gateway may keep you on the faster network application. No solar yet? Get the array right first; a battery multiplies what a roof produces, it does not replace it.

1How long does a Sigenergy SigenStor installation take?

Normally one day on site for a battery-only install, and usually two if solar is going on the roof, because the scaffold and panels come first. Sigenergy quotes a 15-minute stackable installation and five-minute commissioning — but the consumer unit, cable route, isolation and testing are what fill the day. The longer wait is the Northern Powergrid application beforehand.

2Will my electricity be off while you install it?

Yes, for part of the day. We will not quote a duration because it depends on your consumer unit and whether a Sigen Energy Gateway is going in — a gateway is considerably more board work. We agree the window with you on the morning and tell you before the supply goes off. Once commissioned with a gateway fitted, Sigenergy quotes 0 ms disruption on the load side at switchover.

3Does Northern Powergrid have to approve the battery before it goes in?

Usually, yes. G98 covers micro-generation up to 16 A per phase and its definition includes storage, so a battery alongside solar normally takes you past it and G99 applies — and a G99 application goes in before any equipment is installed. A domestic fast track cuts the operator's confirmation to 10 days or less, but it excludes batteries designed to run in island mode, so whole-home backup means the standard G99 route.

4Does the SigenStor have to stay connected to the internet?

It should. Sigenergy's warranty terms require the device to stay connected for firmware updates: it enters Safe Operation Mode after 90 days offline, and more than a year offline cumulatively reduces the 10-year cover to five years from activation. The Energy Controller connects over WLAN, Fast Ethernet or RS485, with an optional Sigen CommMod cellular module if the house signal will not reach the stack.
