Tesla Backup Gateway 2 explained: what it does and why backup needs it

The Gateway is the least glamorous box in a Powerwall install and the one that decides whether your house stays on in a power cut. Here is what it does, and how we scope whole-home against partial backup.

The short answer

The Backup Gateway 2 is the box that decides whether your house is connected to the grid or running on its own. In the UK, a Powerwall 3 that gives you backup power is installed with Backup Gateway 2 — Tesla's UK datasheet lists it as the supported islanding device, and the EMEA owner's manual describes Powerwall 3 as installed with Backup Gateway 2 to control the system's connection to the grid and monitor home energy use.

Skip it and you still have a Powerwall 3 — a battery that saves you money and does nothing at all in a power cut. That is the whole decision.

We fit these as a Tesla Certified Installer — one of around 50 in the UK — so what follows mixes what Tesla publishes with what we find on real boards.

What the Gateway actually does

Tesla describes the Gateway as providing energy management and monitoring for solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup. It is doing three jobs at once.

  • Metering. It sits where the supply meets the house and monitors what the home consumes. That is what makes the app's figures real, and what Savings mode uses to charge the battery while energy is cheap and power the house when it is expensive.
  • Islanding. When the grid fails it disconnects the house from the network, so the Powerwall can energise the property without pushing power down a line an engineer may be working on. Tesla's datasheet names it the supported islanding device; nothing else in the system does this.
  • Grid compliance. The UK Powerwall 3 is a single-phase, 230 V, 50 Hz product certified to G98 Issue 1 Amendment 7, G99 Issue 1 Amendment 9 and G100 Issue 2 Amendment 2 — the standards that matter when we notify or apply to Northern Powergrid.

Most people underrate the metering. A battery that is guessing empties at the wrong time.

Two of those matter at survey. At 584 by 380 mm this is not a small box, and it needs wall space near your incoming supply. The 100 A nominal current on single phase is the other figure we check against your existing supply and main switch.

What happens when the grid goes down

Tesla's UK Powerwall page quotes on-grid and backup power of up to 11.04 kW, depending on local conditions, with a quick transition into backup. On the UK datasheet the nominal AC output at 230 V is installer-configurable — 3.68, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11.04 kW, giving 16 A to 48 A maximum continuous current — so what your system runs at is a design decision. For motor loads, Powerwall 3 has a load-start capability of 185 A locked rotor amps.

The honest limitation: 11.04 kW is plenty for a normal evening and not much for a house running everything at once. In our experience the electric shower is the largest single load in a home, and it is the first thing we discuss leaving out of backup. A second unit lifts the ceiling — the datasheet allows up to four Powerwall 3 units, and a full system reaches 44 kW AC and 94.5 kWh — at a very different budget.

Two settings decide how much of that is there when you need it. Backup Reserve holds back a share of stored energy for outages; below 20% the app shows a Low Backup Reserve indicator, and if an outage arrives with under 5% stored the home loses power immediately until solar recharges the next morning. Storm Watch is available in the UK: it reacts to Met Office Amber or Red alerts that mention a risk of power cuts, notifying you and charging the Powerwall to maximum until the event ends. It needs your phone paired and Grid Charging enabled.

Whole-home backup or partial backup

Tesla's owner's manual describes two configurations. Whole-home backup powers the entire property during an outage. Partial-home backup covers circuits chosen at design stage, with the installer configuring the system to exclude every other load from backup.

Which is right is less a technical question than a domestic one. We ask three things on survey.

  • What has to stay on? Heating controls, fridge and freezer, lighting, kitchen and living-room sockets, the router, and increasingly a home office.
  • What must never come on by itself? The electric shower, the oven and hob, sometimes the immersion heater. These flatten a battery in minutes.
  • What would you regret losing? A freezer in an outbuilding, an aquarium, a sump pump, medical equipment. These come up more than people expect and they change the answer.

Whole-home is easier to live with — nothing to remember, nothing to explain to the family. Partial gives a longer run time from the same 13.5 kWh, because the loads that would empty the battery are not connected to it. Where a house has a large electric load and no appetite for a second Powerwall, partial is usually the better engineering answer, and we will say so.

What it means for your consumer unit

This is the part most quotes skip, and where the price differences between installers hide.

For whole-home backup, everything downstream of the Gateway is backed up, so your existing board can usually stay as it is. The work is at the supply end: the Gateway goes between the incoming supply and the board, with the tails routed through it.

For partial backup, the protected circuits have to be separated from the rest — in practice a second, smaller board, with the relevant ways moved into it. Straightforward for an electrician, but real work, and it is why two quotes for what looks like the same Powerwall can differ. If a quote does not say which configuration it covers, ask before you compare it.

Then check space. The Gateway is wall-mounted, IP55 rated for indoor or outdoor use and rated from -20°C to 50°C, so a garage wall, a utility room or an external wall all work. A cupboard that is already full does not.

Can you skip the Gateway?

Yes, and Tesla supports it properly rather than treating it as a workaround. Powerwall 3 can be installed in a Non-Backup configuration that replaces the Backup Gateway with a Tesla Remote Meter, at lower upfront cost.

What you give up is specific: no backup power during a grid outage, and Storm Watch, Backup Reserve and Go Off-Grid are not included. You keep solar self-consumption and time-based control — the money-saving half of the product — but not the keeping-the-lights-on half.

It is not a dead end. Tesla says a Non-Backup system can be upgraded to backup later by adding a Backup Gateway, so a tight budget defers the Gateway rather than losing it.

Who should take that route? Households on a stable supply, buying mainly to shift cheap overnight electricity. Who should not? Anyone rural, anyone on a spur that trips in high winds, anyone working from home, and anyone who remembers a bad winter.

What it means on install day

Tesla says a typical Powerwall installation takes a full day, with the power off for roughly four to six hours — up to eight hours or more where additional electrical work is required. Partial backup with a second board is squarely in that second category.

Two things to sort before we arrive. First, internet. Powerwall needs an active connection — Wi-Fi at 2.4 or 5 GHz, Ethernet or cellular — and Tesla is clear that the customer provides it and that cellular should not be the primary connection. To secure the full ten-year warranty the Powerwall must stay reliably connected for firmware updates: if it is never connected, or is offline for a long period and Tesla cannot contact you, the warranty may be limited to four years — though Tesla states it will always honour at least four years from first installation.

Second, space and access. Powerwall 3 measures 1,105 x 609 x 193 mm and weighs 130 kg, and Tesla specifies its bottom clearance can be no more than 1,140 mm — which rules out some of the high positions people picture. The Gateway needs its own wall space near the supply.

Tesla publishes no UK Powerwall price and says installation should only be performed by a Tesla Certified Installer, so the installer tells you the cost. Ours is from £8,500 installed for a Powerwall 3 — our own quote guidance, not a Tesla figure. Battery storage in residential accommodation currently qualifies for the 0% VAT rate on energy-saving materials, which HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 says runs to 31 March 2027.

Our take, from actually fitting them

We filmed a full solar and Powerwall install end to end — part one, part two and part three — and the Gateway work is visible in it. Watch that rather than take our word for it. Two things we would tell a friend.

  • Decide your backup scope before comparing prices. Whole-home and partial are different jobs with different costs. Comparing one against the other and picking the smaller number is how people end up disappointed.
  • Do not hide the Gateway to save a metre of cable. You want it somewhere you can reach, not behind everything else at the back of the garage.

One concession. If you are buying purely to shift a cheap overnight tariff and have never had a power cut that mattered, the Non-Backup configuration is a legitimate choice. We will quote it without trying to talk you out of it.
