The short answer
A Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion adds 13.5 kWh of usable storage to an existing Powerwall 3, and Tesla's UK datasheet allows up to three Expansion units in a system. It is an energy upgrade, not a power upgrade: Tesla lists Powerwall 3 units under power scalability and Expansion units under energy scalability, so Expansions make the battery last longer rather than raise what the system can deliver at any one moment.
Two limits decide most jobs. Expansion units are compatible only with Powerwall 3 — you cannot bolt one onto a Powerwall 2 — and a full system tops out at seven units, 94.5 kWh of storage and 44 kW of continuous AC power. In our experience most homes asking about a second battery need one Expansion, not three — and a fair number need neither.
What a Powerwall 3 Expansion actually is
Powerwall 3 was released in September 2023 as the first Powerwall with a solar inverter built into it, and that inverter is why the two units are not interchangeable: the Powerwall 3 carries the electronics — three solar inputs and three MPPTs, up to 20 kW STC of panels, and the AC output that feeds the house — while an Expansion contributes storage, 13.5 kWh of it per unit.
The compatibility rule catches people out. If you have a Powerwall 2 and want more capacity, an Expansion is not the answer and neither is a Powerwall 3 — Tesla states a Powerwall 3 cannot be added to a Powerwall 2. How many you can add, and the system maxima

Tesla's UK Powerwall page words it differently, listing Powerwall 3 as scalable to "Up to 4 units", with "System expansion available anytime" and "40.5 kWh max addition per unit" — 40.5 kWh being three Expansions' worth. Because Tesla's own documents phrase the ceiling differently, we confirm the count against the datasheet at design stage; Tesla's system-design page says installation should only be performed by a Tesla Certified Installer, who gives the final design recommendation.
What an Expansion adds, and what it does not
What it adds
- 13.5 kWh of usable storage per unit.
- Faster charging — the one power figure that does move. A Powerwall 3 alone charges at up to 5 kW AC (installer-configurable) or 5 kW DC; with Expansion units attached that rises to up to 8 kW AC or 8 kW DC.
- More backup headroom. Backup Reserve is a percentage of what you have stored, so a bigger bank holds back more kWh at the same setting. Tesla's app flags a "Low Backup Reserve" below 20%, and an outage that catches you under 5% means the house loses power immediately until solar recharges it next morning. Storm Watch, triggered in the UK by a Met Office Amber or Red alert mentioning a risk of power cuts, charges Powerwall to maximum capacity.
What it does not add
- Continuous output. The UK datasheet makes Powerwall 3's AC output at 230 V single-phase installer-configurable in steps of 3.68, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11.04 kW, and Tesla UK quotes on-grid and backup power of "up to 11.04 kW, depending on local conditions". Storage does not lift that ceiling, or the 185 A LRA motor-start figure. If the shower, oven and EV charger colliding is your problem, more kWh will not fix it.
- Solar input. The integrated inverter's three MPPTs and 20 kW STC input belong to the Powerwall 3.
- Backup itself. That comes from the Backup Gateway — in the UK, Backup Gateway 2, listed on the datasheet as the supported islanding device. Powerwall 3 can also run non-backup with a Tesla Remote Meter instead: no backup power, Storm Watch, Backup Reserve or Go Off-Grid, but upgradeable later. Our Backup Gateway guide covers it.
Where an Expansion physically goes
An Expansion measures 1105 x 609 x 168 mm and weighs 110 kg, or 118.5 kg wall-mounted with the glass front cover and bracket. It is IP67, indoor and outdoor rated, floor- or wall-mountable, and when floor-mounted up to three can be stacked behind a Powerwall 3. The Powerwall 3 itself is 1105 x 609 x 193 mm and 130 kg, IP55, rated -20°C to 50°C with performance that may be de-rated above 40°C, and flood resistant up to 0.6 m of water. One dimension people forget: bottom clearance of Powerwall can be no more than 1,140 mm.
Two things we look for on survey. Structure first — 110 kg of Expansion plus 130 kg of Powerwall on one wall is a real load, and in older housing stock the fixings decide the location before aesthetics do. Then noise: under 50 dB(A) typical at 1 m and under 62 dB(A) maximum is quiet, but quiet on a garage wall and quiet on a bedroom party wall are different conversations.
Expansion or a second Powerwall 3?
The two purchases fix different faults.
An Expansion is usually right when
- The battery empties before morning and the house then imports at full rate. That is an energy shortfall.
- You want to carry more cheap-rate energy through the day — 8 kW charging instead of 5 kW moves more of it inside the same off-peak window.
- You want longer backup rather than bigger backup: same appliances, more hours, and your Powerwall 3 already handles the house's peak loads without complaint.
A second Powerwall 3 is usually right when
- The system runs out of power, not energy — heavy simultaneous loads, or a large house where you want whole-home backup rather than the partial-home backup Tesla's owner's manual describes, where backed-up loads are chosen at design stage.
- You are adding a lot more solar. Each Powerwall 3 brings its own integrated inverter, three MPPTs and 20 kW STC of input; Expansions bring none of that.
And sometimes neither
A fair share of the "I need more battery" enquiries we take are scheduling problems. Savings mode charges the battery when supplier energy costs are low and powers the home when they are high, using the tariff set under Utility Rate Plan in the Tesla app. Tesla notes that Intelligent Octopus Flux enrols Powerwall in a virtual power plant with Octopus managing the battery, while Intelligent Octopus Go is not used for cost optimisation — the tariff changes what the same hardware does. Cost, VAT and warranty
Price. Tesla does not publish a UK Powerwall price — its order page says you are connected to a Tesla Certified Installer who contacts you about pricing. Our own quote guidance is from £8,500 installed for a Powerwall 3; that is ALPS's figure, not Tesla's. An Expansion on an existing system depends on what is already on the wall, so we quote per job and put a fixed price in writing.
VAT. HMRC's VAT Notice 708/6 sets a zero rate on installing specified energy-saving materials until 31 March 2027, reverting to the 5% reduced rate from 1 April 2027. Electrical storage batteries in residential accommodation have qualified since 1 February 2024, including retrofitted and standalone batteries.
Warranty. Tesla warrants Powerwall 3 free from defects for ten years from initial installation, and for UK installations warrants 13.5 kWh of capacity on the installation date and 80% energy retention at ten years. For solar self-consumption, time-based control and backup the warranty is unlimited cycles; other applications are capped at 37.8 MWh of aggregate throughput at the battery AC output.
One condition is worth reading twice: the Powerwall must stay reliably connected to the internet for firmware updates. Tesla's owner's manual says that if the connection is interrupted for an extended period and Tesla cannot contact you, the warranty may be limited to four years, though Tesla will always honour at least four. A dead router is not a small thing on a ten-year asset. For the Expansion specifically we hand you Tesla's own warranty document at quote stage rather than paraphrase it.
What we see on real installs
We are a Tesla Certified Installer — one of around 50 in the UK — and Andy Pemberton surveys and specifies every system we fit. Look at your data first. The Tesla app has months of it. If the battery hits zero at 5am in January but coasts through summer, an Expansion is a winter purchase for a winter problem — size it against the worst month, not the average.
Budget the day, not just the kit. Tesla says a typical Powerwall installation takes a full day with the power off for roughly four to six hours, up to eight or more where additional electrical work is needed. A retrofit onto a live system is its own visit with its own outage window, which we confirm at survey rather than guess. The UK Powerwall 3 is single-phase 230 V, 50 Hz and certified to G98, G99 and G100, so network operator paperwork is part of the job.
