On Sigenergy, here is exactly where we stand: we were an early adopter of the Sigenergy SigenStor in the North East — we install and commission SigenStor systems and have two complete installs documented on our YouTube channel. Sigenergy only unveiled the SigenStor to the UK market in October 2023, so nobody in this region has a decade of SigenStor jobs behind them.
We are also a Tesla Certified Installer — by our own count one of around 50 in the UK — so our advice is not tied to one product: if a simpler battery storage setup or a Tesla Powerwall 3 suits your house better, we will say so. Our accreditations are listed in full.
The 5-in-1 stack, in plain terms
Sigenergy calls the SigenStor a "5-in-One" home energy storage system: solar (PV) inverter, EV DC charger, battery power-conversion stage, battery pack and energy-management system in one stackable unit. For once the phrase describes the hardware.
The head unit is the Sigen Energy Controller, single-phase 3.0–12.0 kW (maximum PV input 6,000 W to 24,000 W) or three-phase 5.0–30.0 kW, at 97.6–98.0% and 98.1–98.4% maximum efficiency. Under it sit SigenStor BAT battery modules, joined by guided quick connectors that auto plug once stacked. The optional SigenStor EVDC module adds DC car charging to the same stack.
One controller takes one to six modules. The datasheets list BAT 5.0 (5.38 kWh total, 5.2 kWh usable), BAT 6.0 (6.02 / 5.84), BAT 8.0 (8.06 / 7.8) and BAT 10.0 (9.04 / 8.76 kWh); six BAT 10.0 modules come to 54.24 kWh total, 52.56 kWh usable. We confirm the exact module on your written quote.
Every pack carries its own DC-DC optimiser, which is why Sigenergy allows mixed use of old and new batteries with different capacities and states of health — add a module in three years and it does not have to match. Where it is not the right answer: if you only want a battery next to an existing string inverter, with no plan for PV, DC charging or backup, you are paying for integration you will never switch on — read adding battery storage to existing solar instead.
The homes it suits around here — and the ones it doesn't
Space is usually not the problem
Census 2021 puts 42.4% of Stockton-on-Tees's 83,756 households in semi-detached homes and 26.5% in detached — the highest detached share of the six Tees Valley and County Durham authorities — while Redcar and Cleveland is 45.3% semi-detached. Most have a garage, a utility or a side return — that is where a stack ends up. Three-phase supplies turn up in larger detached houses and converted farm buildings across the DL and DH postcodes, and the three-phase controller handles those natively; paralleled SigenStors are commercial solar territory.
Terraces need a plan before the deposit
County Durham is 35.4% terraced against 23.0% for England, with only 4.1% of its 234,761 households in purpose-built flats; Hartlepool is 32.9% terraced, the highest in the Tees Valley. On a terrace with no garage, the first question is where the stack goes, not how many kilowatt-hours you want. Owner-occupation also runs from 66.2% in Stockton-on-Tees down to 55.0% in Middlesbrough, so if you rent, sort that consent early.
What a battery will not fix
About 22% of dwellings in County Durham and Darlington pre-date 1919, against about 9% in Stockton-on-Tees, where roughly 22% of stock went up between 1983 and 2008 — the Ingleby Barwick and Eaglescliffe era. Median EPC scores for pre-1929 homes here run 58 to 62, all band D, against 83–84 for homes built from 2012, and a battery does not move that number: it changes when you buy electricity, not how much heat the house loses.
Nearly everyone here is still on mains gas
In 2024 only 2.1% of Hartlepool's domestic properties were off the gas grid, 3.2% in Stockton-on-Tees, 3.5% in Middlesbrough and 6.5% in County Durham — against 15.5% for England. Almost every household we quote keeps gas heating, so the case here is electricity: self-consumption, time-of-use tariffs, car charging and staying on in a power cut. It is not a heating upgrade.
Where the stack physically goes
It is heavier and deeper than the photographs suggest: battery modules are roughly 767 x 270 x 265 mm and weigh 55 kg to 78 kg each, and the Energy Controller is 18 kg with natural convection or 36 kg with smart air cooling. Multiply that by four or five modules and you see why we check access and floor construction first.
The modules, controller and EV DC module are all IP66, and the battery modules are listed for floor-standing or wall-mounted installation, so outdoors is a genuine option — though they run from -20°C to 55°C while Sigenergy's warranty document recommends a working temperature of 10–30°C, so a sheltered garage beats an exposed gable. Each pack has five layers of protection, including temperature sensors and an internal fire-suppression system, which matters when the wall behind the stack is a neighbour's living room.
Northern Powergrid, G99 and the backup catch
Every SigenStor we commission here connects to Northern Powergrid's network — the distribution network operator for the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, serving 3.9 million homes and businesses. Its Stockton office, Alix House, Falcon Court, TS18 3TU, is the address it gives for Network Connections on the G98 and G99 generation forms — the paperwork for a battery in Guisborough or Ferryhill is handled from inside the TS postcode area.
Why a SigenStor is usually G99
G98 covers fully type-tested micro-generation up to and including 16 A per phase — 3.68 kW single-phase, 11.04 kW three-phase — counted across everything at one premises, and the definition explicitly includes electricity storage. Under G98 the installer notifies the operator within 28 days of commissioning — a legal requirement, not a courtesy.
Above 16 A per phase you are into G99, where the application goes in before any generation equipment is installed; the Connection Offer that comes back has an acceptance window typically 30 to 90 days, and the statutory maximum for providing that quotation is 45 working days. A battery alongside PV usually takes the total past 16 A per phase — but a domestic fast track, G99 Form A1-2, cuts the operator's confirmation from 45 days to 10 days or less. Northern Powergrid's conditions for it: combined generation and storage under 32 A per phase, each device under 16 A, export limited to 16 A per phase through a G100-compliant limiter, and no island-mode operation.
The catch that costs people time
The fast track is not available if the storage is designed to operate in island mode — that is, to keep running during a power cut — in which case the standard G99 process applies. Whole-home backup through a Sigen Energy Gateway is island mode. So the moment you say you want the house to stay on when the street goes off, the job leaves the quick route — better to hear that at survey than after paying a deposit.
One more date: from 1 March 2026 new storage devices must switch from import to export mode if grid frequency falls below a defined threshold, and everything commissioned after September 2022 has to be fully G98 or G99 compliant — a good reason not to buy clearance stock online.

The backup film is the useful one, because backup is a gateway, not just a battery. The Sigen Energy Gateway HomePro is a wall-mounted IP55 unit in SP (12 kW single-phase), SP-F (22 kW / 100 A single-phase) and TP (30 kW three-phase) versions, and the 0 ms switchover figure carries a footnote worth reading: it needs the gateway, Energy Controller and battery together, and the controller's nominal power must exceed the total backup load.
An honest note: Sigenergy quotes a 15-minute stackable installation and 5-minute commissioning. The stacking really is that quick — the install day around it is not.

How a SigenStor install runs here
1. Survey and design. Andy looks at the roof, the supply and where a stack could realistically live, and asks what you want the system to do — backup, DC car charging and future expansion all change it. We then size the controller and modules and work out whether the job is a G98 notification, a fast-track G99 or a standard G99. That decision drives your timeline more than anything else.
2. Install. Scaffolding and roof work where there is PV, then the stack — base, controller, modules, gateway and the EV DC module if you are having one — then testing and the network paperwork.
3. Commissioning and the app. We set you up on mySigen, which shows a 3D energy-flow screen refreshed every 10 seconds and a Sankey diagram tracing where every kilowatt-hour came from; British users can select Octopus Energy in its dynamic tariff function. Sigenergy claims its AI Mode gives up to 50% higher average returns than self-consumption mode — the manufacturer's figure, not one we have measured. Our battery tariff guide covers tariffs.
4. Handover and aftercare. Paperwork, an app walkthrough and one number to ring. Under Sigenergy's European warranty terms the battery modules and Energy Controller carry 10 years and the gateway 5, and cover depends on the system staying online — more than a year offline in total cuts the 10-year cover to 5, so tell us at survey if your broadband is unreliable. Cost and VAT
Sigenergy publishes no UK price list, and we will not print a headline figure that moves with module count, phase, gateway and roof — ask us for a fixed price, confirmed in writing after the survey, and see our Sigenergy hub for current guidance. HMRC's Notice 708/6 zero-rates qualifying energy-saving materials until 31 March 2027, reverting to 5% from 1 April 2027; home battery storage has qualified since 1 February 2024, retrofits and standalone grid-charged batteries included.

3Can a SigenStor keep the whole house running in a power cut?
With a Sigen Energy Gateway it can support far more than an essentials circuit — Sigenergy states the HomePro SP-F fully supports 100 amp single-phase backup power for the entire home, with 0 ms load-side disruption when gateway, controller and battery are used together. Two honest limits: the controller's nominal power must exceed your total backup load, and off-grid it delivers twice its nominal output for only 10 seconds.
4Can I add the Sigen EV DC charger later, and does it do vehicle-to-grid?
The EVDC module bolts into the same stack and has to be used with the Sigen Energy Controller. The EVDC 12 charges at up to 12.5 kW DC and, on specific models, can be upgraded to 25 kW by buying a licence; it uses a CCS2 connector with an integrated cable. On vehicle-to-grid, Sigenergy markets it as bi-directional but says V2X is limited by the car's capabilities and depends on standards still being published — treat it as V2X-ready and vehicle-dependent.
