Tesla Powerwall 3: A Certified Installer's Honest Review
As a Tesla Certified Powerwall installer, ALPS Electrical has installed numerous Powerwall 3 systems across Teesside and the North East since it launched in the UK. This review represents our genuine assessment as both installers and energy professionals — not a promotional piece. If GivEnergy was better for a customer, we'd tell them.
What's Different About Powerwall 3
The Powerwall 3 is a significant redesign from Powerwall 2. The headline change: a built-in 5kW solar inverter, eliminating the need for a separate inverter for new solar installations. The Backup Gateway (which manages grid disconnection during outages) is now integrated into the unit rather than being a separate component. The result is a cleaner, neater installation with fewer wall-mount components.
Capacity remains 13.5kWh usable — the same as Powerwall 2, which some find disappointing given the price increase from Powerwall 2. However, the built-in inverter adds genuine value for new solar installations where you would otherwise pay for a separate inverter.

Whole-Home Backup: The Defining Feature
Unlike GivEnergy's optional EPS module or FOX ESS's backup output, the Powerwall 3's backup capability is true whole-home islanding. During a grid outage, the Powerwall switches in under 20 milliseconds — imperceptible to most appliances and electronics. Your entire home runs normally from the battery, including the cooker, immersion heater, and any other high-draw circuits. This is the feature that justifies the Powerwall premium for customers who genuinely value backup protection.
The Tesla App
The Tesla app is genuinely excellent — arguably the best energy monitoring and management app in the sector. Real-time energy flow visualisation, historical data, Time-Based Control for tariff optimisation, Storm Watch (pre-charges to 100% before forecast severe weather), and a clean, intuitive interface. If you are already a Tesla vehicle owner, the ability to manage your car charging, home battery, and solar through a single app is a significant quality-of-life benefit.
Commissioning: The One Frustration
Powerwall commissioning requires internet connectivity and dependent on Tesla's cloud servers. On a handful of occasions, slow server response has delayed commissioning by 30–60 minutes. This is our only consistent operational frustration with the product. Tesla has improved server performance over the past 18 months, and this issue is less frequent than it was in 2023–24.
Cost and Value
Powerwall 3 fully installed (with new solar system) typically costs £9,500–£12,000. For a battery-only retrofit (adding to existing solar), costs are typically £8,000–£10,500. These prices include the Backup Gateway functionality — you're not paying extra for backup capability, it's inherent to the product. Compared with GivEnergy at £4,500–£7,500, the Powerwall premium is real. The premium buys you: the best backup capability, the cleanest installation (built-in inverter), and the best app experience. For customers to whom these things matter, it is worth it. For everyone else, GivEnergy delivers 90% of the functionality at 65–75% of the cost.
