Curriculum
Real-time STEM learning
Schools are excellent candidates for solar panel installation. They have large, typically unshaded flat roofs, their highest electricity demand occurs during school hours when solar generation peaks, and they benefit from funding streams that are not available to other types of building. A well-designed solar system can reduce a school's electricity bill by 30-50%, freeing up thousands of pounds per year that can be redirected to educational resources, teaching staff and facilities.
Beyond the financial savings, solar panels on school buildings deliver powerful educational value. Students can monitor generation data in real time, study renewable energy as a practical subject rather than an abstract concept, and take pride in knowing their school is actively contributing to carbon reduction. Many of the schools we have worked with have integrated their solar installation into the science and geography curriculum.
ALPS Electrical installs solar panels on primary schools, secondary schools, academies, multi-academy trusts, colleges and sixth forms across the North East. We understand the procurement requirements, safeguarding considerations and term-time access restrictions that apply to school projects, and we plan every installation to minimise disruption to the school day.

Funding Options for School Solar
The cost of solar panels need not come from a school's existing budget. Several government-backed funding streams are specifically designed to support renewable energy installations on public buildings, and schools are among the primary beneficiaries.
Government
Great British Energy Programme
The publicly-owned clean energy company has committed to supporting solar on public buildings including schools. Funding via direct grants and local authority partnerships, expanding through 2025-2026.
Schools identified as a priority sector
Regional
North East Mayor Funding
The North East Combined Authority has allocated funding for energy efficiency across the region. Schools within the combined authority area may be eligible for capital grants towards solar installation.
Covers Northumberland to County Durham
Interest-Free
Salix Finance
Interest-free loans and grants for public sector energy projects. Monthly repayments typically less than electricity savings from day one — making the installation cash-positive immediately.
Cash-positive from day one
Academies
DfE Condition Improvement Fund
Academy trusts and sixth-form colleges can include solar as part of broader building improvement projects. Combining roof repairs with solar under a single CIF application can be highly cost-effective.
Combine with roof works
We are already working with schools and academy trusts to prepare applications and complete the technical assessments needed to move quickly once funding windows open. We prepare all technical documentation needed for Salix applications and have experience supporting schools through the approval process. Our MCS certification and TrustMark endorsement satisfy the quality assurance requirements that Salix applies to all funded projects.
Procurement for Schools
We understand that schools must follow specific procurement procedures, whether through local authority frameworks, multi-academy trust tendering processes, or direct procurement for smaller projects. ALPS Electrical is happy to participate in formal tender processes and can provide all the documentation required, including method statements, risk assessments, insurance certificates, DBS clearance evidence and references from previous school installations.
For academy trusts looking to install solar across multiple schools, we offer portfolio pricing that delivers economies of scale across the trust. A single procurement exercise covering multiple sites reduces administrative burden and allows us to offer more competitive pricing than individual school-by-school installations.
Typical School Solar Systems
| School Type | Consumption | System Size | Cost | Annual Savings | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary School | 25,000–40,000 kWh | 15–30kW | £15–25k | £3–6k | 4–6 yrs |
| Secondary School | 80,000–150,000 kWh | 50–100kW | £45–60k | £10–18k | 3–5 yrs |
| Multi-Academy Trust | Varies by portfolio | Phased roll-out | Portfolio pricing | Aggregated | 2–3 yrs* |
*With Salix or other funding support. Payback without grants typically 4-6 years.
Multi-academy trusts operating 5, 10 or 20+ schools have an opportunity to roll out solar across their entire estate. We work with trusts to survey all sites, prioritise based on roof suitability and energy consumption, and deliver phased installations that spread capital expenditure across financial years. Portfolio approaches also allow trusts to aggregate energy savings data for reporting to trustees and the DfE.
Installation Logistics for Schools
Safeguarding & Access
We schedule the majority of work during school holidays. When term-time work is unavoidable, we maintain DBS-checked personnel on site, operate within clearly defined site compounds, and coordinate daily with the school's facilities manager.
Roof work is carried out with full fall protection systems including edge protection and harnesses. All materials are delivered and stored securely outside pupil access areas. We carry out a detailed risk assessment for every school project and provide the school with a site-specific method statement before work begins.
Structural and Electrical Assessments
Before any installation, we carry out a structural assessment of the roof to confirm it can support the additional load of the solar panels and mounting system. For older school buildings, this may involve commissioning a structural engineer's report. We also assess the school's electrical infrastructure to determine whether the existing switchgear and distribution boards can accommodate the solar system or whether upgrades are needed.

Monitoring and Educational Value
Every school installation includes cloud-based monitoring that displays real-time generation data. Many schools choose to display this data on a screen in the reception area or main hall, showing students and visitors how much electricity the panels are generating, how much carbon is being saved and what the equivalent is in everyday terms (kettles boiled, miles driven, trees planted). This data feeds directly into curriculum activities and gives students a tangible connection to the science behind renewable energy.
We can also provide educational materials and arrange a visit to explain how the system works, how electricity is generated from sunlight, and how solar fits into the broader energy transition. Several of our school clients have used their solar installation as the basis for Eco-Schools accreditation projects.

Frequently Asked Questions
A typical 4kW residential solar panel system in the North East costs between £5,000 and £7,000 including installation and VAT at 0%. Larger systems of 6-8kW range from £7,000 to £10,000. Prices vary depending on panel brand, roof complexity and whether you add battery storage. ALPS Electrical provides free, no-obligation quotes with a full breakdown of costs and projected savings.
Most UK homes need between 8 and 16 solar panels depending on electricity usage, roof size and orientation. A typical 3-bedroom semi-detached house uses around 3,500kWh per year, which can be met by a 4kW system (8-10 panels). Larger detached properties with electric vehicles or heat pumps may need 6-10kW systems (14-24 panels). We conduct a detailed survey to recommend the optimal system size for your specific needs.
Yes, solar panels work effectively in the North East. While the region receives less sunshine than the south of England, modern high-efficiency panels like the Jinko Tiger Neo and JA Solar panels we install generate significant electricity even on overcast days. The North East receives approximately 1,100-1,200 kWh/m² of solar irradiance annually. Winter output is lower but panels still generate electricity — pairing with battery storage ensures you maximise every unit generated.
A standard residential solar panel installation typically takes 1-2 days. If you are adding battery storage, this may extend to 2-3 days. Commercial installations can take 1-2 weeks depending on system size. The full process from survey to switch-on usually takes 4-8 weeks, including the DNO notification or G99 application if required.
Most domestic solar panel installations fall under Permitted Development and do not require planning permission. However, you will need to apply if your property is listed, in a conservation area, or if panels will protrude more than 200mm from the roof surface. Ground-mounted arrays over 9m² also require permission. ALPS Electrical handles all planning considerations and will advise you during the survey.
The typical payback period for solar panels in the UK is 6-9 years based on current electricity prices. With battery storage enabling you to use more of your own generated electricity, payback can be faster. After the payback period, you enjoy free electricity for the remaining 20+ years of the panel warranty. Factors affecting payback include system size, electricity usage patterns, export tariff rates and whether you have an EV or heat pump.
Solar panels remain an excellent investment in 2026. With 0% VAT on residential solar, electricity prices remaining significantly higher than pre-2022 levels, and panel efficiency continuing to improve, the financial case is strong. A typical system saves £800-£1,200 per year on electricity bills, with additional income from export tariffs. Factor in rising electricity prices and the payback period continues to shorten.
We install premium tier-1 solar panels including Jinko Tiger Neo, JA Solar and Aiko. For inverters, we are approved installers for FOX ESS, Solis, SolarEdge, GivEnergy and Sigenergy. We select the best combination for each installation based on roof layout, shading, budget and performance requirements. All brands we use come with manufacturer warranties of 25-30 years on panels.
Yes, we can arrange finance options to spread the cost of your solar installation. Finance is subject to status and terms. Contact us for current finance rates and options. Many customers find that monthly finance payments are less than their previous electricity bills, making solar effectively cash-positive from day one.
Solar panels require minimal maintenance. An annual visual inspection and occasional cleaning (if panels become dirty from bird droppings, pollen or tree sap) is usually sufficient. Inverters may need replacement after 10-15 years. We offer maintenance packages including panel cleaning, system health checks, inverter diagnostics and bird proofing. We also service systems installed by other companies.
