The Yorkshire Electrical Sector Is Pivoting
Across Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull and Harrogate, electrical firms are adding solar panel installation, battery storage and EV charger installation to their service offerings. This is not a niche trend — it is a wholesale shift in what "an electrician" does and what customers expect. CCS Heating & Renewables in Cornwall made the same pivot from electrical into renewables several years ago, and their growth trajectory mirrors what we are now seeing across Yorkshire and the North East.
At ALPS Electrical — based in Yarm at the northern edge of Yorkshire — we have been NAPIT-registered electrical contractors since our founding, and have built the renewable installation side alongside it. This gives us a perspective on what it takes to do both properly, and what to look for when choosing a Yorkshire electrical contractor that claims to offer renewables.
What Sets a Genuine Renewable Electrician Apart
Many electrical firms in Yorkshire have added "solar panels" to their website without the infrastructure to deliver quality installations. The genuine markers of a renewable-capable electrical contractor are:
- MCS certification: Non-negotiable for solar and battery installations. Verify via the MCS Installation Database. Without MCS, your customer cannot claim Smart Export Guarantee payments.
- NAPIT or NICEIC registration: The electrical competent person scheme that allows self-certification under Part P. NAPIT certification is the standard we hold, covering both solar and general electrical work.
- OZEV approval for EV chargers: Required to process the OZEV grant on behalf of customers. Without OZEV approval, customers must claim the grant themselves — a significant administrative burden.
- Design capability: Properly designed solar systems require roof surveying, shading analysis, system sizing calculations and G99/G98 assessment for larger systems. Off-the-shelf packages without proper design are a red flag.
Commercial EV: The Fast-Growing Yorkshire Niche
Commercial EV charger installation is growing faster than residential in Yorkshire's industrial corridor — particularly around Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield. Fleet operators, logistics companies and commercial property landlords are all installing multiple charge points. ElectriFusion Solutions, also Doncaster-based, focus heavily on commercial EV infrastructure and are a good reference point for the commercial end of the Yorkshire market.
Commercial EV installation requires specific expertise in load management (ensuring the building's DNO supply can handle multiple simultaneous chargers), DNO notification and potentially supply upgrades, OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme processing, and integration with fleet management software. The technical complexity is significantly greater than domestic installation.
The Multi-Trade Advantage
The strongest renewable electrical contractors in Yorkshire are those who can handle the full project: consumer unit assessment and upgrade where needed, cable installation for solar, EV charger installation and commissioning, battery storage installation, and all associated MCS and OZEV paperwork. Customers who use a single firm for all of this avoid coordination problems between trades, get a single point of contact for warranty and aftercare, and often receive a better overall price through combined project pricing.
At ALPS Electrical, our installations in the York, Harrogate, Knaresborough and northern Yorkshire area demonstrate this combined capability. Lumos Energy in Wiltshire operates the same multi-trade model in the South West — their approach provides a useful comparison for Yorkshire homeowners.
What Yorkshire Homeowners Should Ask Their Electrician
Before commissioning any combined electrical and renewable work, ask:
- Can I see your MCS certificate and verify it via the MCS database?
- Are you OZEV-approved for EV charger installations?
- Will I receive an Electrical Installation Certificate for all notifiable electrical work?
- Who designs the solar system — do you use an in-house designer or a third party?
- What happens if there is a fault 18 months after installation?
A contractor unable to answer these questions directly and confidently should not be your first choice for combined electrical and renewable work. Verify everything via the relevant professional register before proceeding.
Wider Yorkshire and National Network
National network Solar Bureau connects vetted installers across the UK, and Manchester O&M specialists Solar Maintenance Solutions provide ongoing maintenance and fault investigation for Yorkshire systems where the original installer is no longer available.
